From Milford Sound* to the gold-mining towns of Central Otago, over long winding gorges and waterfalls of the Haast Pass Highway* The section of State Highway 6 linking Wanaka and Haast is a spectacular scenic road. It offers an on-the-road-insight into the beautiful and expansive Te Wahipounamu (South-West New Zealand World Heritage Area). Drive over long winding gorges, through craggy mountain passes and past waterfalls that seem to sweep past the road. the road travels on through Marlborough vineyards to maritime Kaikoura, colonial Christchurch, majestic Mount Cook and the glaciers* New Zealand's most visited and well-known glaciers are the Southern Alps’ Franz Josef and Fox Glacier. Along the wild West Coast, they can be seen from the road; distant glaciers on one side, sea on the other. They are unique as they descend to less than 300 metres above sea level amidst the green lushness of a temperate rainforest.
Driving towards Aoraki Mount Cook National Park is another scenic experience. Neighbouring Tasman Glacier is the largest in New Zealand - over 27 kilometres of moving ice.
