Mt Cook
At 3,754 metres Aoraki Mount Cook is New Zealand's highest mountain, and the jewel of Aoraki Mount Cook National Park. It is one of hundreds of rugged snowy peaks that make up the ‘spine’ of the South Island - the dramatic Southern Alp ranges.
Set high amongst them is the village of Mount Cook, a stepping-stone to the park and home to the luxury Hermitage hotel. Visitors can land on snow during a stunning scenic flight or sample pristine glacier walks, river flat horse trekking and guided ski adventures.
It is a short drive to Lake Tekapo a beautiful alpine lake that sits 700 metres above sea level, making it New Zealand's highest. The lake's stunning turquoise hue is the product of rock ground into dust by glaciers. Drifting particles catch the sun, giving the lake its remarkable appearance.
On Tekapo's southern shores visit the quaint Church of the Good Shepherd with its panoramic mountain views. Alternatively, take a boat trip or guided fishing tour; and at night savour the clear alpine star-scape from the renowned Mt John Observatory.
