Kaikoura

Set against the snow-peaked Kaikoura Ranges, this tiny Pacific seaside town is world renowned for its amazing whale watching tours. Visitors can spot whales from the air, but the most memorable experience is up close on a chartered boat cruise. This will take you metres from majestic sperm whales, which can grow up to 20 metres. You might also glimpse humpback whales and orca.

Kaikoura is named after the plentiful crayfish or rock lobster found along its rocky surf-washed coastline. It is known for its fishing and coastal walks where one can spot hector and dusky dolphins in the surf or hundreds of wild fur seals metres from shore.
