Dunedin
As New Zealand's Architectural Heritage Capital, Dunedin is proud in colonial history. It also boasts outdoor adventure and some of the world's most rare wildlife.
Set on the Otago Peninsula of the South Island's southeast coast, the city drew Maori settlers over 400 years ago. It was later settled by Scottish and Chinese immigrants, and flourished during the gold rush of the late 1880s. Dunedin has the country's oldest university and a vibrant student culture. Beautiful stone Victorian and Edwardian buildings are scattered through the city, which is also home to New Zealand's only castle.
On Otago Peninsula visit the world's only mainland breeding colony of Northern Royal Albatross. This breathtaking stretch of coast is also home to fur seals, sea lions and the planet's rare Yellow-eyed Penguin.
Play golf at one of the city's 12 courses; surf its beaches; mountain bike Otago's central rail trail; or fish for wild salmon in Dunedin's city-side harbour.
