Taupo
On the shores of our biggest lake with spectacular views of three snowy peaked volcanoes, Taupo - is New Zealand’s thermal heartland. Formed in 186AD by an enormous eruption, tranquil Lake Taupo has had a violent past. The ash and molten rock spewed so high the fiery spectacle was recorded across the world in China.
The tiny central North Island town is rich in Maori history, and arguably the country’s most famous trout fishing destination. Whether trolling for Rainbow Trout on a chartered cruise or trekking one of the many fly-fishing rivers in search of a monster Brown, you will be amazed by the region’s natural beauty.
Mt Ruapehu, an active volcano, is just 90 minutes drive from Lake Taupo and home to New Zealand’s two largest ski fields.
After the day’s activities soak in a thermal hot pool amongst lush native bush. Dine at one of the town’s award-winning lake front restaurants, or at one of the world’s top luxury resorts - the beautifully decadent Huka Lodge situated on the banks of the Waikato River.
